Comparison between RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generative) and fine-tuning for Large Language Models (LLMs).

Rag Vs Finetuning: Which Is Best For Your LLM Applications?

RAG has external knowledge read whereas fine-tuning comes with training data. Refer to this RAG v/s Fine-tuning guide to know the use cases and benefits of both.

The history of LLMs goes back to the 1950s. However, the launch of ChatGPT in 2022 made LLMs the focal point of the world.

The advanced capabilities that new age LLMs showcase are worth exploring. Businesses today are looking to integrate LLMs into their applications. It enables them to elevate their products and offer high-end user experience.

LLMs are trained on large chunks of datasets that include text and codes. It enables them to perform certain natural language processing tasks depending on the training they receive.

When implementing these LLMs into your products, you will have to modify their training so that they will perform tasks as per your business requirements.

If your model is not trained as per your business needs, it won't do the tasks you expected.

When it comes to enhancing the performance of LLMs on business specific tasks, there are two options: RAG and finetuning.

Data science experts often debate which approach is better. However, I believe that it totally depends on your business needs. Both techniques enable LLMs to function with high efficiency and accuracy. But their use cases can differ.

So what are the use cases where RAG is more effective?

Is RAG better than finetuning? Or does finetuning double the potential of LLMs?

Let’s find out everything.

What is RAG?

RAG stands for retrieval-augmented generation. It is an AI framework that retrieves and processes data from external sources to ground LLMs on the most relevant and up-to-date information.

RAG in LLMs has some notable benefits:

Timeliness, context, and accuracy: RAG provides grounded evidence to generative AI, going beyond what the LLM itself can provide. By retrieving data from specific sources, RAG enables AI models to possess domain-specific knowledge, which is particularly useful for specialized tasks or industries requiring precise and specialized information.

Reduced hallucinations: RAG reduces the likelihood of generating inaccurate or hallucinated responses. Since it relies on real data to support generated text, it provides a more reliable and contextually accurate output.

Efficiency and cost-effectiveness: Implementing RAG can be more cost-effective than other approaches, such as fine-tuning or building entirely new models. It eliminates the need for frequent model adjustments, data labelling efforts, and costly fine-tuning processes.

Versatility: RAG can be applied to a wide range of applications, including customer support chatbots, content generation, research assistance, and more. Its versatility makes it suitable for various industries and use cases.

Improved performance and accuracy: RAG ensures that the model has access to the most current, up-to-date information, which improves its performance and accuracy.

Use cases where RAG is more effective in LLM applications

·       Analyzing financial reports

·       Assisting with gas and oil discovery

·       Reviewing transcripts from call centre customer exchanges.

·       Searching medical databases for relevant information.

·       Providing timely, contextually appropriate, and accurate information in sports league chatbots.

·       Enhancing the accuracy of LLM-generated responses in customer support chatbots.

·       Improving the performance of LLMs in content generation tasks

·       Providing context-sensitive, detailed answers to questions that require access to private data to answer correctly.

·       Improving the accuracy of LLM-generated responses by providing grounded evidence to generative AI, going beyond what the LLM itself can provide.

·       Reducing the likelihood of generating inaccurate or hallucinated responses.

What is finetuning?

Finetuning an LLM refers to further training the model on domain-specific datasets to enable it to perform relevant tasks.

Benefits of finetuning LLM applications:

Improved performance: Fine-tuning LLMs can adapt pre-trained models to specific tasks or domains, resulting in improved performance.

Efficient resource utilization: Fine-tuning LLMs is more resource-efficient compared to training a language model from scratch. Starting with a pre-trained model, it leverages the knowledge already captured by the model, saving time, computational power, and training data requirements.

Adapting to new data: Fine-tuning LLMs allows the model to adapt to new data or changes in the underlying data distribution. By exposing the model to task-specific examples during fine-tuning, it can learn to handle variations, trends, or biases present in the specific dataset.

Task customization: Fine-tuning LLMs enables customization of the model's training objective, loss functions, or architecture to align with specific tasks or objectives. This flexibility allows for task-specific optimization, leading to better results in the target application.

Uses cases where finetuning LLM is best:

·       Content generation tasks: Fine-tuning LLMs can improve the performance of LLMs in generating content that is specific to a particular domain or use case.

·       Customer support chatbots: Fine-tuning LLMs can enhance the accuracy of LLM-generated responses in customer support chatbots by adapting the model to specific nuances, tones, or terminologies.

·       Domain-specific databases: Fine-tuning LLMs can generate more accurate responses by incorporating essential data from domain-specific databases.

·       Medical applications: Fine-tuning LLMs can improve the performance of LLMs in medical applications by applying domain-specific fine-tuning.

·       Instruction tuning: Fine-tuning LLMs can improve the performance of LLMs in instruction tuning.

Which is best for your LLM application?

We cannot vote for either RAG or finetuning as declaring one the winner will be disregarding the other. Both RAG and finetuning are effective ways of improving the performance of LLMs as per your business requirements.

I would consider RAG more suitable for tasks where the application needs access to up-to-date data for accurate responses. It is a good choice for tasks where labelled data is scarce and expensive to obtain. RAG gives more priority to accuracy. So tasks where you can't compromise on accuracy, RAG is the way to go.

While finetuning will be better for applications to do tasks that involve complex patterns and relationships.
